Knowing your family history is important so you can make healthy choices early on. You can reduce your likelihood of getting a chronic condition and improve your quality of life by making few small healthy choices.

Better nutrition and eating the right things may help prevent, delay, or manage chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and chronic heart disease. Limiting salt, high sugary sodas, and saturated fats in greasy foods, and including several servings of fruits and vegetables might help you stay healthy, help your blood pressure, sugar diabetes and heart disease.   Eating healthy may also help overweight folks lose 5% of their weight so they can prevent becoming a diabetic later.

Increased exercise and physical activity can also help chronic diseases. It is suggested to have at least 150 minutes of weekly activities like walking, dancing, biking, or gardening to stay in shape and healthy. This may also help you lose weight or keep the weight off.  Physical activity reduces anxiety, blood pressure, risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and several forms of cancer. It keeps your muscles strong and joints active.

Inadequate sleep has been associated with more obesity and depression and poor control diabetes and heart disease. People who sleep less usually have faster decline of kidney function.  Sleeping at least 7 hours daily may help your chronic health problems. Being active during the day, avoiding caffeine and large meals at dinner can help you sleep better at night.

Excess alcohol use can lead to chronic health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, digestive problem, and liver disease. It can also weaken your immune system and lead to various cancers.  By avoiding excess alcohol, you can reduce these health risks significantly.

One of the best things you can do to improve your health is stopping smoking or never start at all.  Smoking worsens progression of chronic kidney disease, heart disease, chronic lung disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Smoking may lead to premature death. There is help available for those who want to quit.

To prevent chronic health problems, visit your doctor regularly for check-ups, to screen for diabetes, chronic kidney disease, heart disease and cancers, to catch and treat them early.
